Shooting & Fishing

We have good contacts in both sports and are happy to make all the necessary arrangements for you.

The White Swan Inn is a member of the Game Conservancy Trust. Its amenities make it an ideal shooting lodge. We offer safe gun storage, we can arrange secure kennelling as well all the usual hotel facilities. We are fiercely proud of our reputation for looking after shooting/fishing parties and references are available on request.

Shooting

Tuition - Cotton Dale Shooting School (tel: 01944 710313) near Staxton, on the A64 between Malton and Scarborough. A registered and purpose-built shooting training school run by a former member of the British Olympic shooting team. Facilities for disabled shooters.

Shooting Parties - The White Swan Inn is located near some of the best Sporting Estates in the country. They offer high class grouse, pheasant, partridge and duck shooting. By their nature, shooting parties need bespoke arrangements and the kind of specialist service The White Swan Inn has experience in. That said, shooting of this quality is often a 'closed shop' and demand far outweighs supply.

Fishing

Tuition - Available from the Professional Anglers Association, Ryedale Angling Academy, 30, Princess Road, Malton (tel: 01653 693273). Expert fishing tuition for all ages and abilities with courses at Brickyard Farm Lakes, Amotherby, Malton. Fly fishing tuition also available from Roger Beck (tel: 01439 788483).

Salmon fishing - Salmon can be reeled in on the River Esk at Egton Estate Beat, Egton Bridge, Whitby, (tel: 01947 895505). Day tickets are limited to three rods per day and hours of fishing are from 7am to midnight in 15 named pools. Prices are from £20 per rod. After large investment in the whole river, and particularly by Egton Estate, the River Esk is once again in the ascendancy.

Hazelhead Lake - The "Fly Fisher's Paradise." A wonderful fishing retreat at Newgate Foot Farm, Saltersgate (tel: Mrs Alison Johnson on 01751 460215). Panoramic views and a two-acre lake holding a good head of wild brown trout. A stocking programme ensures good sport throughout the season, with season tickets from £50 for seven days. Alternatively you can enjoy half a day's fly-fishing at £8 (allowing two fish) or a whole day at £14 (allowing four fish).

Other local fishing contacts are Moorland Trout Farm, Newbridge (tel: 01751 473101) and Fun Fishing at Pickering Trout Lake, Newbridge, (tel: 01751 474219).
