Walking
This is an area of outstanding beauty and contrast. From wild moorlands to unspoilt coastline, from ancient forest to tranquil meadows. One of the most famous walks is the 42-mile Lyke Wake Walk, and also challenging is The Crosses Marathon. For walkers of different abilities, here are some of our suggestions.
Bridestones - Easy/3 miles. So called as the route passes by the magnificent Bridestones, two sets of balanced rocks on land owned by the National Trust. They have been shaped by the wind and rain over 60,000 years or more and are a sight not to be missed.
Farndale's Daffodil Walk - Easy/3 miles. A pleasant walk in the Spring months when the daffodils are in bloom. The walk takes you along the valley bottom through a carpet of wild daffodils. Very relaxing.
Round Levisham - Moderate/12 miles. The first part of this walk passes by an old Church built at the time of the Norman Conquest and then through one of the most beautiful valleys in Christendon passing the famous North Yorkshire Moors Railway and Skelton Tower, an old ruined folly.
Robin Hood's Bay - Moderate/14 miles. This walk takes you right to the heart of Robin Hood's Bay. A climb is involved through the Bay Town, full of old fishermen's houses. You can follow the abandoned rail track on the journey back for some 4 miles. Many woodland birds and excellent sea views can be seen on this picturesque walk.
The Moors by Rail and Foot - a step back in time with the option of some worthwhile exercise. This trip is best attempted in clear weather. It is advisable to take good walking shoes, a spare jumper and lightweight wet-weather gear.
