Flying

Whether you are a novice or experienced flyer, The White Swan can help you make arrangements suited to your flying interests and experience. 

Among the flying choices and other facilities conveniently close to us are:

• Gliding can be arranged through the Yorkshire Gliding School at Sutton Bank, Thirsk (tel: 01845 597237) - a wonderful place to go with the wind and ride waves, ridges and thermals. Glide in a two-seater with a qualified instructor or, if you are experienced enough, enjoy a solo flight.
• Microlighting with Baxby Airsports Club at Baxby Manor Husthwaite, York (tel: 01347 868443). Instruction can be given for weightshift, three axis and other aircraft. For the thrill of microlighting without the expense of tuition, microlight circuits and bumps can be arranged locally for flights up and down beautiful Newtondale.
• Paragliding or (for the uninitiated) hang-gliding in a rucksack. Paragliding gives you the unique opportunity to fly solo on your first day. Individual instruction can be arranged for you from approximately £60 an hour with a member of the British Paragliding Association at Hole of Horum (10 miles from Pickering).
• Hang-gliding offers that surreal experience of floating silently through the air. More complex than paragliding, with controls to achieve higher speeds, it presents more of a physical and mental challenge. Tuition at sites close to Leeds can be arranged with the Hang Gliding and Airborne Paragliding Centre, Halifax.
• Skydiving/Parachuting for the ultimate adrenalin rush, arranged through the British Skysports Paracentre at East Leys Farm, Grindale, Bridlington (tel: 01262 677367).

While we are happy to make arrangements on your behalf for flying tuition, please remember that most flying clubs operate on advance bookings - and all flying is weather dependant.
