A Dozen Things That Are Better than Roses

Our idyllic corner of North Yorkshire in winter has an enchanted air. There’s a beauty and magic to the white frost and mist that clings to the fields on a morning. The summer crowds have gone, leaving behind beautiful empty spaces. It’s peaceful and still, leaving room for its romantic side to emerge.

This Valentine’s why not indulge in some good old-fashioned romance? Here’s 12 things that we think are far better than roses.

1.       Wrap up warm, hold hands and go for a walk

We are surrounded with the best walking country in the UK. We recommend heading for Stain Dale, Bridestones, The Hole of Horcum and Levisham Moor. The Bridestones are a series of elegantly shaped gritstone outcrops while the Hole of Horcum is a vast gouge in the earth. Enjoy the lushness of Stain Dale, the glory of open Levisham Moor and the superb fringe of Levisham Wood. It’s over 10 miles but it’s so worth it.

2.    Go Stargazing

Lie down, look up and relax. Pack a picnic, a blanket and warm clothes. For true romance a bottle of wine or flask of hot chocolate is a must.

Regular public stargazing events take place at the Low Dalby Astronomy Centre in Dalby Forest between October and March. See the stars, planets, nebulae and galaxies under one of the darkest skies in the country.

3.       Take a Nostalgic Trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Your very own Brief Encounter. What could be more romantic than holding hands on the platform waiting for the arrival of your steam locomotive? Relax in cosy compartments and wood panelled carriages with a glass of Champagne in hand while taking in the captivating landscapes of the National Park.

4.       See the Coast at Sunset

Don’t miss the unique beauty of North Yorkshire’s coastline. Choose to visit one of the remote little fishing villages nearby. Spend an afternoon with the sand between your toes or taking a stroll along magnificent rocky cliffs then find your favourite spot to watch the sun go down together before heading back to the Inn for a candlelit supper.

5.       Storm Watching

In really wild Winter, nothing beats the elemental thrill of watching huge thundering seas crash relentlessly on North Yorkshire’s dramatic coast. The coastline is at its most atmospheric and romantic in winter and it is exhilarating to walk on clifftops above thundering waves, or tramp across the moors in buffeting wind and swirling mist. Retreat to the fireside afterwards and find refuge in romance.

6.       Winter Picnic

Picnics aren’t just for summer. We will pack you a picnic and a couple of blankets in your picnic basket, to snuggle up in when you find your perfect picnic spot. Settle down and while away a few hours.

7.       Get Physical

And see North Yorkshire from the seat of a mountain bike. There’s something for everyone, whether it be a challenging tour over the moors, an exhilarating buzz through Dalby forest or taking something of a steady pace through tranquil scenery, we guarantee all will be as equally rewarding. After the exercise and fresh air head back to the inn for a deep bath with luxurious Bath House toiletries, curl up in a fluffy bath robe and relax.

8.       Just the Two of You

However you chose to spend the day head back to the hotel, cosy in and enjoy a candlelit three-course dinner in your room. Our rooms have been designed with every detail in mind so you can close the door and really hide away from it all.

9. Set a Date to Visit one of the Country’s Beautiful Romantic Gardens

One of finest and romantic historic houses in the country, Castle Howard is a haven of peace and tranquillity. There’s 1,000’s of acres of simply stunning grounds and gardens to explore,  discover the magical walled garden, wander through ancient woodland and marvel at the temples, statues, fountains and lakes.  In the summer, visitors can (weather permitting) take boat trips on the Great Lake and enjoy the spectacular views of the house. There is an air of fantasy about this place, a truly enchanted landscape.

 11.   Rievaulx Abbey

Yorkshire’s most romantic abbey site and simply stunning – the beautiful ruins of one of England’s finest Cistercian abbeys are set in a quiet vale three miles outside Helmsley. Nestling in a peaceful valley you’ll find splendid views across the Yorkshire countryside. For the full dramatic unveiling you can walk from Helmsley’s castle on a bucolic path through the countryside, which takes an hour or so. The ruined church, walls and chambers are set within lovely landscaped grounds, perfect for a picnic.
